DOST-NCR Engages Balik Scientist from PUP for Biogas Plant Development for Slaughterhouses and Food Service Establishments
The DOST-NCR engaged with Balik Scientist Dr. Ginno L. Andres of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines for the project "Biogas Plant in Abattoirs and Portable Biogas Digester for Food Service Establishments as a Source of Sustainable Energy". The project aims to design and fabricate a biodigester plan for slaughterhouses or abattoirs, and a portable biogas digester for kitchen and food wastes from food service establishments in Metro Manila.
Abattoirs or slaughterhouses have the potential to produce biogas from solid and liquid waste by-products. Tons of wastes are produced in slaughterhouses everyday threatening the environment and health conditions of communities near them. Likewise, diesel fuel costs incurred in the meat industry also reach towering costs. Moreover, the biggest volume of wastes generated in the NCR is mostly food and kitchen wastes.
Thus, this project is aimed at using waste by-products from abattoirs and food service facilities to generate energy, which is expected to result in estimated savings of about PhP 1 million on diesel fuel costs annually.
The project will be composed of a design and validation of the biodigester system, fabrication, deployment, and installation to a partner slaughterhouse. Simultaneously, the research team will develop a portable biogas digester fit for a food service establishment.
The project will be a collaboration of the PUP and National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS).
